28. Sphinx.
Near the base of the Pyramids. It is 150 feet long, and 60 feet high. Its body is of limestone, and is very decayed. It represents a lion crouched. It has the head of a woman, and is composed of red syenitic granite, from its neck up, which is remarkable well preserved, not withstanding its wear of over 4000 years.
